Meta-issue: what needs to be fixed before we can release 2.0 to PyPI?
The title says it all - anything that needs fixing before we release, @FObersteiner ? Please create additional issues with milestone publish as v2.0.0 on pypi. Thanks!

I'll spend more time actually using the package in the coming weeks, also when other people start using the package, more things will probably come up that would have never occurred to me. But right now, I don't see anything that should prevent a release of v2.0.0 to pypi... Let's put it out there and see how it evolves.

- What I think would be a nice convenience enhancement are the
__str__methods for the dataset and variable classes. I like to use those to get a quick insight of what's in the dataset / variable.
I can make a draft soon.
- Also, I was wondering if you want to put the usage examples in a different directory (./tests seems strange to me) @christophknote ?
